Altmark
Countryside Holidays and Brick Stone Gothic
Gentle hills, grassland, wide-stretched forests, river meadows and idyllic villages. That’s what makes the Altmark the perfect countryside holiday destination.
The 1500 kilometres of bike and hiking trails and 1600 kilometres of horseback riding trails make this the ideal spot for your bike, hiking or horseback riding holidays. You will not find a longer horseback riding trail system in Europe. Water sport fans will love the clear Arendsee (Lake) measuring 1368 acres and the River Elbe. The rural character of this region also shows in the „Altmärkischen Bauernwochen“ (Farmers Weeks). 2008 is going to be the year of Hanseatic Tradition for the Altmark. The old timbered town of Salzwedel is hosting the 28th Annual Hanseatic Day. Guests and participants from 15 countries are expected. Seven more Hanseatic towns are presenting their historic treasures and buildings. You’ll find magnificent town gates, wonderful churches and town-halls. All kinds of activities under the Hanseatic theme are offered to celebrate this special year: Tours, culinary adventures, biking, hiking, horseback riding, markets and fests for the whole family.
| You should also plan to visit a pyramid cake bakery. It’s a local speciality in Salzwedel, where it is being baked over an open flame. Or the Winckelmann Museum in Stendal, showing an accessible Trojan Horse, 16 metres (48 feet) high. The fascinating Cathedral in Havelberg, a building on the “Strasse der Romanik” (Romanesque Road), combines elements of both Gothic and Romanesque style.
Altmark’s “Gartenträume” (Garden dreams), historic parks and gardens in Sachen-Anhalt, has quite a bid to offer: Take for instance Castle Krumke and the garden near Osterburg. Or the Rampart in Gardelegen built in 1300, and the Wagenführ City Park in Tangerhütte from 1870. When taking a tour through the park you will learn all about the industrialist family Wagenführ. Arendsee is the biggest lake in Sachsen-Anhalt, in the north of this region. It is the perfect place for all your water sport adventures. The lake is one of the deepest and cleanest lakes in Germany and has received the “European Blue Flag” since 1998. Come and spend your holidays here surfing, sailing, diving, on the beaches or take a tour on the “Queen Arendsee” a paddle wheel steamer.
