Culture, History, Water, Nature –
Here is what you can expect in this region: Historic convents and castles, adventure parks and water parks, excellent music and theatre, and endless nature to relax. Even world famous monuments like the Water Bridge north of Magdeburg, the capital of Sachsen-Anhalt. Here you will find 22 of the 80 buildings and monuments of the "Strasse der Romanik" (Romanesque Road), and also many gardens and parks from the “Garden Dreams” exhibit and the well-known Elbe River Bike Path (Elberadweg). The Elberadweg is 360 km long (212 miles) and takes you from Breitenhagen in the South to Magdeburg and further to Jerichow in the North. Enjoy the nature and beautiful views along the path. Explore some amazing historical monuments on your bike ride through this region. Here are some from the " Strasse der Romanik (Romanesque Road): St. Thomas Church in Pretzien with beautiful wall paintings, the Convent in Jerichow the oldest brick stone building in northern Germany and the 200 year old Salina in Schönebeck- Bad Salzelmen.
The highlight of your tour is Magdeburg with the Elbe River Bike Path going right through it. Take in this modern capital with its 1200 year history. You can explore both historical and modern sides to the city in guided tours by bike, bus or by foot. The most famous buildings here are the Convent “Unser Lieben Frauen” (Our Good Women) and the Cathedral, erected on the banks of the river Elbe. Both buildings are part of the Romanesque Road, which starts here in Magdeburg. | When visiting Magdeburg make sure to include some time for the beautiful parks. The city has about 337 hectares (833 acres) of green and you are invited to stroll, relax in and admire the beautiful parks. How about a day in “Elbauenpark” (Elbe Meadow Park)? Here you can find all kinds of wonderful places to explore. A butterfly house, and adventure museum “Jahrtausendturm” (millennium tower), or the Amphitheatre “Seebühne” (lake stage). Here you can experience exciting national and international events and performances surrounded by stunning nature.
Between River Elbe and the Harz mountains beats the heart of Magdeburger Börde, a hilly valley with the most fertile soil in all of Germany. Ever been on a “sugar and beet tour”? Here you can do just that. You will learn all about Bördes “white gold”, the cultivation and even get to try some local products made of the sugar beets. In Ummendorf, named Europe’s most beautiful village in 2004, you can visit the Börde Museum inside an old castle surrounded by water. For friends of motor sports we suggest a visit to the Motor Sport Arena in Oschersleben. And last but certainly not least: The 918-metre Magdeburg Water Bridge or Wasserstrassenkreuz completed in October 2003 is a water bridge that connects two important shipping canals, the Elbe-Havel-Canal and the Mittellandcanal which meet near Magdeburg. It’s an architectural and engineering masterpiece. |
